Xbox is 15 Years Old Today!

11/15/01 was a glorious day in gaming. Xbox as a brand made it’s first steps into the world of console gaming on this day FIFTEEN Years ago. Not only is 11/15 Xbox’s birthday but it’s the birthday of the greatest FPS of all time: Halo CE.

Xbox along the way has made great progress from it’s beefy “Duke” controller til now with Xbox One. Easily one of the biggest highlights in all of gaming occurred during the OG Xbox lifetime: Xbox Live. Xbox Live changed the way we, as consumers, play our video games. Console gaming before that was about single player and “couch” co-op gameplay. Once Xbox Live hit the shelves and a game like Halo 2 came around, all my friends and I wanted to do was play games online. Every game I got after that day I would instantly go online and check out a multiplayer match. Sports games were no longer about franchise play and shooters were no longer about quality campaigns. Everything became competitive thanks to XBL.

After that we saw the launch of the Xbox 360 and with it a slew of new franchises like Gears of War and Fable. We got wireless online play, wireless controllers and kinect never mind. 360 also introduced to myself the world of eSports. Watching pros compete in halo 3 and Call of Duty Black Ops 2 were some of my favorite memories with the console. The 360 also had the best UI out of any console to date 1000% no if, ands, or buts.

Now we’re on to the Xbox One aka “Next Gen” aka “Current Gen.”Xbox One after a slow start thanks to kinect (RIP) and among a few other things (*Cough cough, poor E3 presser) has bounced back with the new and improved Xbox One S and a plethora of new triple A games has now been the highest selling console the last 4 months running. We’ve seen games like Halo 5, Gears of War, Forza and Sunset Overdrive grace the console as exclusives. Xbox One is also the only new gen console to have backwards compatibility to go back on the 360 era of games. Xbox One albeit the OG version is a bit of an eye sore and the menu system can be fickle is a fantastic piece of hardware. The Xbox One controller is the best controller around and if you have a few pennies lying around the Xbox Elite controller is far and away the best controller on the market.

As an Xbox fan boy since day one, it’s been a pleasure to be a fan and cannot wait to see what the next 15 years brings! Thank you Xbox.
