If 2016 is the Year of the FPS, 2017 is surely the Year of the Open World/RPG’s. 2016 was one of the more packed years we’ve had with FPS games…actually 2015 wasn’t that bad for shooters as well with Splatoon, Halo 5, Black Ops 3, Battlefront, Fallout and Destiny TTK to name a few.
Looking past 2016’s Year of shooter dominance and ahead to 2017 I have listed out just a few open world and RPG type of games expected to release in 2017.
RPG’s & Open World Games
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Persona 5
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Destiny 2
- Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Mass Effect Andromeda
- Sea of Thieves
- South Park: Fractured But Whole
- Kingdom Hearts 2.8
The 2016 Game Awards category for best RPG the list was:
- Dark Souls 3
- Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
- World of Warcraft: Legion
- Witcher 3: Blood & Wine
- Xenoblade Chronicles X
Now looking at the Game Awards list- Deus Ex was meh, Dark Souls 3 was more Dark Souls (good), World of Warcraft is World of Warcraft, Blood and Wine is essentially big DLC, and Xenoblade is on the Wii U (RIP). Witcher 3 won….again. Now this should not be taken as a swipe at the Witcher which is an incredible game but no way should it win back to back years.
This mainly has to do with the fact that so few RPG’s have been coming out YoY (Year over year) on the newer consoles, instead we are on a crash course for shit storm of massive games in 2017. Meanwhile I’m still over here playing Fallout 4 from 2015.
In the list above Red Dead, Persona, Destiny, Zelda, and Mass Effect are all known to have lengthy play times, with the likes of Persona, Destiny and even Red Dead coming in as those “games that if you only have $ for one game this is what you buy.” Zelda is new to the open world but that game in itself is looking like a 50+ hour game just like Mass Effect.
Now I don’t want anyone getting the impression that these are “complaints” because they are not. I’m simply just impressed and excited at all the potential games we have available to grind out next year. As said before, the past few years we had 2 maybe 3 big RPG games that you had the option of playing but never 6-7 must own games.
At this time I would say Red Dead Redemption 2, Zelda, Mass Effect, Horizon, Persona 5 and South Park are sure fire guarantees in my eyes going into the new year. As said before, in 2016 I played Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 andddddd Fallout 4 (2015). Granted Skyrim did come out but counting that felt wrong.
As much as I have enjoyed the past 2 years being ‘shooter’ friendly years, I simply cannot wait for 2017 and the year of RPG’s. It’s time to get lost and enjoy grinding character levels, upgrading armor, and choosing the path of righteous or the path of evil. 2017: The year of side quests and dialogue
