Nintendo Switch: Buyers Guide

So I’ve been asked a ton on whether or not to purchase the Nintendo Switch right now. Obviously with it being a brand new console + having that Nintendo nostalgia wrapped around it, there’s a lot of buzz and hype. Is it justified?

Short Answer: No. The Nintendo Switch is not worth it at this point in time. Right now the system is as bare bones as a console can possibly be, and as long as you can wait on playing the Legend of Zelda then there is no reason to run out and get this console.

Long Answer: Right now, the Switch is a Zelda machine. It’s made to solely play this game and only this game. It will also be like that till around the fall. If you already own a Wii U there is no reason to get the console currently, just play Zelda on the Wii U.

The only way I would say “yes 100% you should buy this console” is if you have a free $360+ to throw around. Or you are in dire need of a portable gaming device/ are a Zelda fanatic that needs to play right away.

The Switch is a great device and it will only get stronger but at this point in time at it’s price point it just doesn’t make sense for people. Yes, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a perfect 10 type of game that is of must own must play quality (Review will be up 3/9), but I don’t see one game as a reason to shell out $300 if you are a casual player.

Come the fall however, this device will simply sell itself to you. By the time the fall hits there will be at minimum 4 MUST have titles (Which is more than PS4 and X1 had in its first year).

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (3/3)
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition (April)
  • Splatoon 2 (Summer)
  • Super Mario Odyssey (Fall)

That’s also not including the plethora of indie titles and potential hits (if they release)….looking at you Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Plus, if Skyrim tickles your fancy that will be out this fall as well.

If early sales indications hold true you won’t be seeing an Xbox One or 3DS type of year 1 price cut but you will, by the fall, have some top quality titles to play. This making the system a must own.

I will have a full review of the Switch up tomorrow (3/7) with my early thoughts and impressions on the console itself. In short, it’s an amazing piece of hardware that seems to find it’s perfect niche for gamers on the go and at home.

At the end of the day, do as you may. Zelda will still be here come the fall or summer. If you can’t wait and you pick one up, you will not be disappointed because Zelda is one of the best games I have played in at least 3+ years.

Let me know in the comments below if and when you intend on picking up a Switch!
