Nintendo’s back, baby!
Now before we get too excited, let’s remember it’s only Month #1. However, there is a lot to be excited about. With Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 DX, and Super Mario Odyssey yet to be released, it’s hard not to see the Switch continue to succeed in 2017 and beyond.
*knocks on wood*
In it’s earnings report Nintendo announced that the switch had sold 2.74 million units worldwide since it’s launch. The Switch is off to a solid start when compared to the Wii U and even the Wii in terms of first month sales. However, it remains to be seen how the Switch will do long term, with the Wii U and the Wii we already know what that outcome was.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has sold 2.76 million copies on Switch alone. Which for those keeping track at home is .02 million more copies than the console itself. Which begs the question, did people actually just buy the game to taste?
Additionally, Breath of the Wild sold 1.02 million copies on the Wii U.
The Switch is off to a strong start in both sales and public opinion. With a fleet of classic IP’s still to come, and hopefully virtual console support, Nintendo has placed itself in a good position to close out 2017 strong. The little victories are all Nintendo needs as they keep riding the momentum, hopefully this continues for years to come. When Nintendo software and hardware is flying off shelves it’s the best time to be a gamer.
